College & Career Supports

From the beginning, New Design students work with our in-house College Counselor and grade-specific Guidance Counselors to map their post-grad steps. Students receive SAT prep, and one-on-one counseling to determine which colleges are right for them and explore career tracks of interest.

Additionally, we partner with pros like University SettlementGuiding & Connecting for Student Achievement (GCSA), and the Chinese-American Planning Council (CPC) to prepare students for life beyond high school. Our College and Career Readiness (CCR) programs help students build skills and earn credentials by providing opportunities to explore future pathways through coursework, advising, real-world experiences, and college tours.

Students can earn scholarships, access to college-level courses, workshops, mentorship, and in-the-field work experience, both through programming built into the school day and after-school offerings.

At New Design, we help every student find their next step.

University Settlement helps us provide personalized college support that goes beyond the application process. In addition to one-on-one college advisement, students benefit from workshops designed to build essential skills for success—like stress management sessions led by licensed mental health clinicians to help seniors navigate the transition to life after high school.

New Design students also have priority access to the Higher Education Access Program (HEAP) program, part of University Settlement’s College Passport Initiative. HEAP supports first-generation and low-income students as they transition from high school to college, offering a trusted space to ask questions, build confidence, and adjust to new academic and social environments. Through weekly check-ins, tutoring, and licensed mental health support, students receive consistent guidance while navigating new routines, coursework, and often new cities.

But the support doesn’t stop after the first semester.

HEAP continues through students’ second year of college, helping them push through the “sophomore slump” with ongoing advising and encouragement. Workshops and one-on-one sessions are also available in Spanish, ensuring more students and families can fully access these resources. This extended, holistic approach helps New Design graduates stay on track and thrive in their next chapter.
