Design + Chemistry Integration: Marbling
Chemistry teacher Theresa Stanley has teamed up with Design teacher Julie Zenobi to introduce students to the fusion of science and design. For this lesson, students learned about the chemistry of marbling and then were able to test their skills.
Surface tension was one of the chemistry terms students learned, which refers to the tight bonds water molecules have at the surface of the water. This allows the paint to float. Concepts of adhesion and cohesion, as well as the chemical reactions of gall and carrageenan, were explored.
