Fitness for Life

The Fitness for Life program promotes physical activity, healthy eating and living.  Attention is directed toward awareness and movement toward the  healthy options  in life, as well as the development of social skills such as cooperation, competition and sportsmanship.  Classes and courses are structured to allow for the improvement in numerous physical skills necessary for many different physical activities.

Social Studies

The primary goal of the Social Studies Department is to empower students with both the knowledge and skills to become critical, reflective, and active participants both locally and globally.  This goal will be attained by adhering to a philosophy of transparency, translation and transformation where students discover the underlying structures hidden beneath events in history.  Students are asked to read, interpret and be critical of a variety of sources, so that we can begin to construct meaning and value.  Students will link what is learned to practice, thus using this knowledge to empower themselves and others.  Students are enrolled in four years of social studies courses at NDHS.

Spanish Department

Students must complete two years of Spanish to graduate from NDHS usually in their 10th and 11th grade years.  Department courses intend to increase the presence of Spanish language and Spanish culture of NDHS.  The program focuses on creating a learning community where students consistently share, build off and learn from each other’s ideas

Design for Life Program

The D4L program provides students with the skills, tools and capacities to empower and awaken self-awareness and raise consciousness about life’s choices and opportunities.  All NDHS students are enrolled in D4L all four years.  The advisory type program meets 5 minutes every morning and 10 minutes every afternoon.  D4L teachers act as advisors for students each year mentoring students socially, emotionally and academically.
